What is the proper way to exacute a flying change? what are the common mistakes?
Thank you for this question Hanna. What a great question which has been stumping a great many equestrians.
A flying lead change is required for hunters to ensure they keep balanced, and perform their jump correctly.
The proper way to execute a lead change is to ask for the canter on the new lead!
This is the simple answer. Canter on the left lead, prepare your horse, ask for the new lead, canter on the right lead. The trick in the training is the “preparing your horse” part. This is the crux of the training.
The correct way to execute a lead change is 2 strides away from the fence. Ideally, we would like to have the horse land on the correct lead so a change doesn’t interrupt the flow of the course. Lead changes have gotten tremendously important and most people focus on the lead rather than the jump itself. don’t get me wrong, leads are important, but the focus on them has caused horses to stiffen, swish and, in some cases, kick out.
Common mistakes are:
change through trot – breaking stride is a major error
no lead change
skip (which is almost a trot step)
late behind change – change in front first then 1 or two strides later change behind
late change – changes which happen part way throught the corner
good change
correct lead.
Thanks for the great question.
